Q1. Please tell us about yourself, what you do within the music industry?
I'm Ben Holland, 22 years old and I make music & DJ under the alias Tastic and have been since 2004.
Q2. How did you first get introduced to music?
It started when I met a guy a bit older then myself who was already DJing with some really old belt drive Labtech turntables, it was only after hours of sitting around bored watching I decided to learn and have a go myself. It was some time after learning to mix I decided I wanted to have a go at making my own music. I managed to get a copy of Sony Acid 6, and threw some cheesy loops together and learning what different plugins and effects would do to various sounds. A few years passed and I still wasn’t really making anything listenable which is when I got myself a copy of logic 8 and watched about 19,0000000 Youtube tutorials.
Finally after a few years since thinking, ”I want to make music” I knew my way around the software and I had a pretty good idea of what plugins would do what to my sounds. It was here I got stuck and wanted to learn more which is when I enrolled on a Music and Sound Engineering course to further learn about sound.
Q3. What are your inspirations?
I get inspirations from everywhere, literally. I seem to go through phases of what i’m listening too without much deviation at the time. Currently i’m hooked on big reverbs, thick ambient pads and that moody future sounding sub. A few months ago I was all about harsh angry unheard sounds and before that It was all about live drums and smooth guitar, who knows where ill next grab some inspiration from. My number one rule is to listen to everything and not get hangups about certain genres, if its a good quality piece then the chances are ill like it.
Q4. Who are your musical idols?
Hard question as I listen to such a range of genres, Im gonna stick with the above rule if its good quality listening then its down on the list.
Q5. What music equipment do you currently use?
Imac, Logic X, Virus TI2, Akai mpk25, Tascam us2000 Audio Interface and a comfy chair.
Q6. What is your biggest musical achievement to date?
Number 3 in the D&B Arena Charts.
Q7. How long have you been working in the music industry?
Q8. What are your musical plans for the future?
To get a permanent job preferably post production sound editing/ creating for film/ game and tv use.
Q9. Where do you see yourself in 10 years time?
Hopefully to be pushing the music i’m making still and working a secure sound job.
