Bandmaster Powerhouse 1975
Designed and manufactured in Scotland in the mid-1970s, the Bandmaster Powerhouse was an unusual rhythm machine that used specially recorded 8-track tape cartridges containing performances from real drummers and percussionists rather than electronically generated drum sounds. Its loops could be played at different tempos and blended between related patterns, giving it a natural feel and distinctive analogue character. The combination of real performances, magnetic tape saturation and mechanical playback makes the Powerhouse sound very different from conventional drum machines, while the rarity of surviving units and original cartridges has made it highly sought after by collectors, producers and musicians looking for authentic 1970s drum textures.
